Overview
The ToupTek G3M678M is a mono planetary camera with Sony’s IMX678, a 1/1.8″ STARVIS 2 sensor of 8.3 megapixels with 2 µm pixels.
Mono uses every pixel for detail, which makes it the stronger choice for the Sun in hydrogen-alpha or white light, for the Moon, and for planets through an IR-pass or RGB filters. The 4K frame covers a large area in one shot, and response extends well into the near infrared, where seeing is steadier.
For the planets it samples well at around f/10. Read noise drops to 0.5 e⁻, there’s no amp glow, and full resolution runs at 47 frames per second in 8-bit mode.
Connections and fitting
The camera runs entirely from its USB 3.0 cable, so there’s no separate power lead to route. It fits the telescope with the 1.25″ nosepiece, which also takes 1.25″ filters, or with a C or CS adapter for lenses. An ST4 port and cable mean it can double as a guide camera. A 512 MB buffer holds frames while they transfer, so high frame rates don’t drop frames on a slower laptop.
