Overview
The ToupTek G3M2210M is a mono planetary camera with the SmartSens SC2210, a 1/1.8″ sensor of 2.1 megapixels with large 4 µm pixels. Peak quantum efficiency is above 92%.
It suits the Sun, the Moon and planets through filters at long focal lengths: around f/20 for the planets, so an SCT or Maksutov with a 2× Barlow. Full resolution runs at 150 frames per second in 8-bit mode, or 93 in 12-bit, and read noise drops to 0.47 e⁻.
Large, sensitive pixels and a small frame also make it a good guide camera, including on an off-axis guider where stars are faint.
Connections and fitting
The camera runs entirely from its USB 3.0 cable, so there’s no separate power lead to route. It fits the telescope with the 1.25″ nosepiece, which also takes 1.25″ filters, or with a C or CS adapter for lenses. An ST4 port and cable mean it can double as a guide camera. A 512 MB buffer holds frames while they transfer, so high frame rates don’t drop frames on a slower laptop.
