Overview
The ToupTek G3M178M is a mono planetary camera with Sony’s IMX178, a 1/1.8″ sensor of 6.4 megapixels with 2.4 µm pixels and a 14-bit output.
Mono and a 14-bit output suit the Sun and the Moon, where fine tonal steps matter more than colour. The frame covers large sections of either in one shot, and it works through hydrogen-alpha and calcium solar filters. It also makes a capable guide camera.
Full resolution runs at 29 frames per second in 14-bit mode or 58 in 8-bit. The IMX178 is an older sensor than the STARVIS 2 models, with higher read noise, so for the planets the G3M678M is the better pick.
Connections and fitting
The camera runs entirely from its USB 3.0 cable, so there’s no separate power lead to route. It fits the telescope with the 1.25″ nosepiece, which also takes 1.25″ filters, or with a C or CS adapter for lenses. An ST4 port and cable mean it can double as a guide camera.
