Overview
The Player One Neptune-664C is an uncooled colour astronomy camera built around Sony’s IMX664 sensor. It is a planetary and lunar camera with a larger frame than most.
The 1/1.8″ sensor measures 7.8 × 4.5 mm. On a Celestron C8 at f/10 it covers about 13 × 7.6 arcminutes, which helps keep a planet in frame and covers more of the Moon.
Each 2.9 µm pixel holds up to 38,500 electrons, and read noise falls to about 0.67 e⁻ at high gain. The camera runs at 93 frames per second at full resolution. The pixels are best matched at around f/14.
The window passes light from 310 to 1100 nm and the sensor responds strongly in the near infrared. Add a UV/IR-cut filter for natural colour, or use an IR-pass filter in poor seeing.
Dark frames show no amp glow. A 256 MB buffer stops dropped frames on a slow laptop, and the sensor tilt plate helps with Newton’s rings in solar imaging.
