Overview

The Player One Neptune-C is an uncooled colour astronomy camera built around Sony’s IMX178 sensor. Its 6.4 MP frame suits detailed images of the Moon and the Sun, as well as the planets.

The 2.4 µm pixels are small, so they are best matched at around f/12. On a Celestron C8 at f/10 the 7.4 × 5.0 mm sensor covers about 12.5 × 8.5 arcminutes. The camera runs at 60 frames per second at full resolution, with 14-bit output.

Read noise falls to 1.3 e⁻ at high gain, and high-gain mode switches on automatically above gain 30. The window has a UV/IR-cut coating, so colours are natural without an extra filter.

The sensor tilt plate helps with Newton’s rings in solar imaging, and a 256 MB buffer stops dropped frames on slower laptops. Fit a CS-mount lens and it also works as an all-sky or meteor camera.
