Overview

The Player One Neptune-C II is an uncooled colour astronomy camera built around Sony’s IMX464 sensor. It is made for the planets and the Moon, with a 4.2 MP frame.

The sensor measures 7.9 × 4.5 mm. On a Celestron C8 at f/10 it covers about 13 × 7.6 arcminutes, enough to keep a planet in frame as it drifts. The camera runs at 93 frames per second at full resolution.

Read noise falls to about 0.7 e⁻ at high gain, and high-gain mode switches on automatically from gain 83. The 2.9 µm pixels are best matched at around f/14.

The IMX464 is sensitive in the near infrared. Use a UV/IR-cut filter for natural colour, or an IR-pass or methane filter to work in poor seeing.

The full well is 12,000 electrons. For a deeper well on the same frame size, see the Neptune-664C. A 256 MB buffer stops dropped frames on a slow laptop or USB 2.0 port.
