Tri Bahtinov Masks

Focus and Collimate your Scope with these great tools

What is a Tri Bahtinov mask?

A Tri Bahtinov mask is a device which is commonly used with Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes (SCT). The benefit of the “Tri” design over the standard Bahtinov masks produced by Pro Astronomy is the capability to optimise collimation as well as focus.

An SCT is collimated by adjusting the screws of the secondary mirror. If the mask is aligned with these screws then the resulting star spike pattern will allow you to adjust each screw in turn until all 3 sets of star spikes are optimised.

If you have any questions about our masks then please get in touch.

All of our masks are laser cut from cast acrylic. this provides very sharp clean cuts on the slots which enhances the visibility of the star spikes.

Pro Astronomy Bahtinov masks utilize a 3-point clamping system. Most competitor masks provide 2 holes to simply hook the mask over the end of the telescope. This can lead to the mask rotating (not good for collimation), not being aligned to the OTA, or could simply fall off while slewing. Our masks utilize 3 points of contact with a CAM mechanism to hold the mask square and central to the end of the OTA.

Each mask is taylored to a specific telescope. Of course if you can not find your model here, get in touch and we will add it to the website. By marrying a mask design to a telescope we are able to ensure the mask fits perfectly as well as being able to optimise the slot spacing to ensure the best quality star spikes.

Do you use a hyperstar? We can ensure we create a suitable size hole in the mask to accomodate this. Also, if you want a certain colour, get in touch via the contact page and we will always aim to please.

New Bahtinov Mask Request Form

Use the form below to enter the details of the telescope that requires a Bahtinov mask. If we have any further questions we will then be in touch to discuss further. Once the design has been made (typically 1-2 days) we will send you a link to the item along with a discount code as a thank you for providing us with more information.

Is a secondary hole required? eg if you use a hyperstar.

There are a lot of telescopes in the world! They come in all shapes and sizes, refractor, reflector, long focal length, short focal length. The amount of variation is huge. While you can purchase generic Bahtinov masks we at Pro Astronomy believe that having a mask tuned to your setup can result in brighter star spikes and provide a base for easier focusing and with our Tri Bahtinov masks collimation too.
While we try to ensure we have many telescope brands covered we can of course not keep up with every variation out there. If you have not found the Bahtinov mask that you require, use the form above to submit the details we need to design your perfect mask
